The Michigan DNR is asking that we be alert for a new-to-Michigan invasive insect species, the Asian longhorned beetle. This one likes to chew up hardwood trees, particularly maples. It’s a lovely looking thing, as shown below. More information about this can be found in this newspaper story.

A pickleball tournament, complete with awards, was suggested by Mike Germain at the start of summer. Several CHA pickleball players — Ed and Alicia Perdon, Garth Barrett, John Radamacher and Lynn Livingston — teamed up to plan and conduct the tournament.

Defying dark clouds and a passing storm, 14 die-hard pickleball players, among more than 20 who signed up, participated in the first CHA pickleball tournament held Saturday, July 26. Family members and friends cheered as players competed in two events. Cold drinks and popcorn were available throughout the event.

Under grey skies, the Yellow team won the first event testing their pickling skills – groundstrokes, volleys, dinks and serves. Team members were John Radamacher, Ken Ranger and Leslie Etienne. Each player received a small pickleball bag.

The sun came out under blue skies when the players competed in the round robin game plays. Ben Katerberg, was crowned King of the Courts, with Tom Werner as runner-up. Among the ladies, Kathy Dinkle emerged Queen of the Courts and Leslie Etienne was the runner-up.

Players, families and friends partook in a Luau-inspired potluck dinner after the games. Players were pleased with the tournament format and shared thoughts on what worked/what can be improved for the next tournament.

The Cherry Home Shores garage sale will be held on Saturday, July 19, from 9:00 am – 1:00 pm with a rain date of Sunday, the 20th. Contact Kent Van Emst (269-330-1055) is coordinating the event.

There have been numerous recent sightings of a juvenile black bear in the neighborhood, mostly towards the north end of Cherry Home Shores. He or she is small and just searching for food but is often spotted during the day, which is unusual. While you’re outside, please keep a close watch on children and small pets. And please, please remove any food sources, such as bird feeders, from your property. This is a young bear who needs to be encouraged to move on towards the orchards and state park. If we continue to make it easy for him/her to find food in the neighborhood and it becomes too used to humans, things likely won’t end well for the little bear.

A long haired black cat was found in the neighborhood. If you’re the owner or know the owner, please contact Gerald Kopchia @ 231-386-7720 or respond on the CHA website.

The monthly Board of Directors meeting for June will be held at the clubhouse on Saturday, June 14, at 10:00 a.m. You can attend in person or via Zoom. A tentative agenda is available by clicking here.
