General Information

Parks & Beaches

There are four parks in Cherry Homes Shores, all located along the waterfront on Forest Beach Shores: South Park,  Clubhouse Park, Central Park, and North Park. Each has access to the beach and the lake, along with picnic tables/benches, and charcoal grills.

The parks in Cherry Homes Shores are private, so that CHA members/property owners, their families and friends have exclusive use of these amenities.

Be kind, be courteous, and allow for social distancing. We all need — and deserve — to enjoy the outdoors and feel safe doing so.

In addition to the park beaches, there are several beach/water access points along Forest Beach Shores. Please keep to the paths and respect neighboring yards and beach areas. Note: Michigan law allows people to walk on the beach along the shoreline up to the most current high-water mark. Please keep in mind that although the water level is at a record high, respecting homeowners’ property and privacy are much appreciated!

Trash Collection

Trash pickup for CHA residents is provided by GFL Environmental of northern Michigan. Residents who sign up for year-round service will pay a set fee billed periodically, established by their needs. To ask questions or sign up for service, call 231-943-8088, or click here for the link to their website.

Part-time and seasonal residents have two options for trash disposal:

1) Purchase RED prepaid bags from Tom’s market in Northport or Traverse City and place them curbside on Mondays before 7 a.m.

2) Use a rollout garbage bin (available from GFL) and make sure it’s out by the street before 7 a.m. on Monday. However, you must call GFL by Friday the week before you plan to put out your bin. Customers will be billed for the number of pickups made.

Please note: To minimize the chance that wildlife will get into the trash before it’s picked up, please make sure bin lids are closed and secured. If using RED bags, avoid leaving them out overnight if possible.

Natural Gas

Natural gas lines have been installed along the roads in Cherry Home Shores by DTE Energy. Owners now have the option to continue using propane or having their home connected to DTE’s natural gas lines.  Note that all appliances serviced by natural gas will also have to be converted from propane.

Recycling

Leelanau County, through American Waste, offers free single-stream recycling at eight locations around the peninsula, including one on Mill Street in Northport. Single-stream recycling means that all recyclable  items go in the same bin – plastics, metal, fiber, and glass. IMPORTANT: PLEASE DO NOT PUT PPE (masks, gloves, etc.)! IN RECYCLING! These items should be thrown away after use!

The Northport Recycling Center is open 24/7, with multiple bins available. For more information, locations, and a list of items accepted, please use this link: American Waste Recycling

Household Hazardous Waste & Electronics Disposal

Leelanau County Residents have the opportunity to safely dispose of household hazardous waste and unwanted electronics three or four times a year. Please call 231-256-9812 to find out the next collection date and site, and to set up an appointment to drop off materials.

Clubhouse Access and Rental

The clubhouse is been available for private gatherings, such as family reunions, receptions, group club events, and birthday parties, with a rental fee of $50 per day (no overnights). A four-digit key code will be required to access the facilities, which can be requested by filling out and submitting the form available under the Resources/Documents link above. A complete list of clubhouse rules is available here as well.

Kayak Racks

CHA has kayak racks available for members to use at Clubhouse Park, Central Park, North Park and South Park. Storage is free but must be applied for by downloading and completing the application and waiver form under the Resources/Documents link above.

The storage season runs from May 1st through October 31st of each year. Last fall, the CHA Board modified the policy so that any member who was happy with his/her assignment can keep it each year by notifying the kayak coordinator via email by October 31 each year. Currently, there are seven (7) spaces at clubhouse park and four (4) spaces at Central Park available. Requests for storage for the 2024 season will be accepted beginning April 1, 2024. Rack assignments will be processed in the order received and made based on the size and weight of each kayak. Kayak rack space is limited to CHA members.

If you want to apply for a space this season, please submit your completed waiver forms using the Member Document Upload page or by mailing it to our post office box.  Lynn Livingston has agreed to be our Kayak Coordinator again this year and handles assigning spaces.

Commercial Rentals

Based on a previous court ruling, Cherry Home Shores does not allow any commercial rentals of properties within the association. The ruling specifically precludes advertising of properties on any of the various online services or rental agencies. However, the ruling does permit use of one’s residence by family or friends on an occasional or incidental basis.

For more information, please see the Residential Use of Land and Buildings document under the Resources/Documents page.
